August 30 All about Baknak SholOn the first day of arrival, Kwong and I decided to go to the base camp three days later regardless of the fear of high altitude sickness. Renting a Toyota 4500 for a four days trip there was worthy of 4400 yuan, we had to find at least two persons to join making it more economical. Heading Banak Shol to try our luck.
There're two notice boards covered with different shapes of notices, all hand-written, posted in all directions with one on top of another. But their missions are more or less the same---teaming up with some strangers to go to the peripheral attractions either by jeeps or by bikes. Some notes may began with: two GG looking for two MM to go to .... Or there are two JJ heading for.... ( GG means pals, gege. MM means gals, meimei, and JJ means elder gals, jiejie) You have to get used to some MSN or QQ culture before decoding the notes sometimes, haha.
Anyway, after examining the notes, I found no conincident want. I had to post my own notice. One problem occured subject to contact number. I;ve got no mainland mobile no. ,the person who happened to be interested in had to make a long distance call or SMS, it will be very unfavarable. Have to leave our room number as well.
That's what i wrote: two JJ want at least two persons (actually I would have pen down two GG if it's not that explicit) to go to base camp on 5/8, renting .....
(Later we found out there was an "internet city" right across the road of Bakah Shol which consisted of 2400 computers! )
To my surprise, after about two hours, there's a man coming to us. Mr Zhao with his 15 year old son drived all the way from Xian to Lhasa in the previous eight days. He wanted to get a time off and rent a Jeep and driver to go to base camp.
It was not bad because it would be safe to travel with a man and his son and we may count on him when crash into any difficulties. But the bad thing was, he demanded to take off one day earlier given Kwong was suffering high altitude sickness.
Not long after that, we were notified a Dutch couple were also interested. They left us the hostel and room no. to contact them. Not bad, we can check whether they can leave on the same day we offer.
All destiny! The Dutch were out when we went to the room. So happened we met Zhao's and then made friends with a couple from Shenzhen for instead. Zhao's invitation are so irresitible that we agreed to go for dinner with them and then met up with the new friends for late supper. It's a night for mingling, chatting, laughing and having fun. After that night, we have to compromise our needs, sorry for Kwong!
I have to admit, Baknak shol is perfect for posting but disaster for accomodation. The room that we lodged was dark with the windows facing an narrow alley. The toilet was smelling with water drifting from the ceiling. The attendants there were not sincere at all ! It is all about the overwhelming fame it had. It's just too famous with its name pop up in every single web page of Lhasa. Even the traveller's Bible---Lonely Planet---- recommends it as the most popular one. They are becoming too proud to cope with the need of the customers as there always be too many of the hopefuls quening up......
Without second thought we moved on to another hostel which was only a little bit expensive, the first thing in the next morning.... August 18 meeting people如果你問我世上有邊一度地方,
